Commentary on Jude: Contending for the Faith

The book of Jude may be short—only one chapter—but it packs a powerful message for us today. Jude, the brother of James (and a servant of Jesus Christ), wrote this letter to warn believers about false teachers and to encourage us to stand firm in the true faith.

As we read through Jude, we hear his urgent call to stay grounded in God’s truth, to resist error, and to build one another up in love. Let’s walk through this important letter together and see what it teaches us about living faithfully in a world full of deception.

1. Jude’s Urgent Purpose (Jude 1-4)

Jude starts by telling us he originally wanted to write about the salvation we all share. But the situation was so serious that he had to change direction.

“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” — Jude 1:3 (KJV)

We are called to contend for the faith. That means we must actively defend and protect the gospel message. We can’t be passive. False teachers had crept into the church unnoticed, twisting God’s grace and denying Jesus Christ.

“For there are certain men crept in unawares…” — Jude 1:4 (KJV)

Even today, false teaching sneaks in when we’re not paying attention. Jude calls us to be alert, wise, and ready to defend the truth.

2. Remembering God’s Judgment (Jude 5-7)

Next, Jude reminds us that God takes rebellion seriously. He gives three examples:

  • Israel in the wilderness – saved from Egypt but later judged for unbelief.
  • The fallen angels – who left their place and are now reserved for judgment.
  • Sodom and Gomorrah – cities destroyed for their wickedness.

“Even as Sodom and Gomorrha… are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.” — Jude 1:7 (KJV)

These stories show us that God is both merciful and just. If we turn away from Him, there are real consequences. Jude isn’t trying to scare us—he’s urging us to stay faithful and serious about following Christ.

3. Warning Against False Teachers (Jude 8-13)

Jude doesn’t hold back when describing false teachers. He says they:

  • Defile the flesh
  • Reject authority
  • Speak evil of things they don’t understand

He compares them to Cain (who murdered his brother), Balaam (who led Israel into sin for profit), and Korah (who rebelled against Moses).

“Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core.” — Jude 1:11 (KJV)

Jude uses strong images to describe these people—they are like clouds without rain, dead trees, raging waves, and wandering stars destined for darkness (Jude 1:12–13).

False teachers may look impressive, but they bring no real life, no real truth. We must be careful who we listen to and follow.

4. God’s Judgment Is Certain (Jude 14-16)

Jude quotes from Enoch, an ancient prophet, to stress that the Lord will judge the ungodly:

“Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all…” — Jude 1:14–15 (KJV)

God will not let evil go unchecked forever. He sees, He knows, and He will act. This should encourage us—justice is coming, even when it feels delayed.

5. How We Should Respond (Jude 17-23)

Jude turns his focus to us, telling us how to live in light of all this.
First, remember what the apostles taught—there will be mockers in the last days.

“But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ.” — Jude 1:17 (KJV)

Second, build yourselves up in faith:

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.” — Jude 1:20 (KJV)

We need strong foundations. We do that through studying Scripture, praying, and staying close to the Holy Spirit.

Third, keep yourselves in the love of God and look for His mercy. Stay rooted in His love and never lose sight of the hope we have in Christ.

Finally, reach out to others:

“And of some have compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire…” — Jude 1:22–23 (KJV)

Some people need gentle encouragement. Others need bold warnings. Either way, we must care enough to speak truth and rescue those who are stumbling.

6. A Beautiful Doxology (Jude 24-25)

Jude ends with a breathtaking reminder of God’s power:

“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy…” — Jude 1:24 (KJV)

God is able to keep us steady. He is able to present us faultless before His throne. We don’t have to stand in our own strength—God Himself will carry us and complete the work He began.

“To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.” — Jude 1:25 (KJV)

We end not with fear but with worship—because our God is mighty, wise, and worthy of all glory.

Final Thoughts

The book of Jude reminds us that:

  • We must contend for the faith.
  • We must recognize and reject false teaching.
  • We must stay strong in prayer, Scripture, and love.
  • We must trust God to keep us and bring us safely home.

Even in a world full of deception, we can live faithfully because the God who called us is faithful.
Let’s hold tight to the truth, build each other up, and keep our eyes on Jesus—the one who will never fail us.

Amen!
