Grand Overview: What the Whole Bible Is About
The Bible tells one big story—from creation to new creation. It’s about God’s plan to redeem fallen humanity through His Son, Jesus Christ. It reveals God’s holiness, our sin, His mercy, and His promise of eternal life for those who believe. Every section builds on the one before, pointing us to the gospel and inviting us into relationship with God.
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105 (KJV)
Part 1: The Law (Genesis through Deuteronomy)
These first five books are known as The Law, The Torah, or The Pentateuch. They give us the foundation of the Bible’s message—where we came from, why the world is broken, and how God begins His covenant relationship with His people.
Let’s walk through each book:
1. Genesis – The Beginning of All Things
Genesis shows us creation, the fall of man, the flood, and the beginnings of God’s covenant with Abraham. We meet people like Noah, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. We learn that God is Creator and Promise-Keeper.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” — Genesis 1:1 (KJV)
2. Exodus – Redemption and Deliverance
Exodus shows God delivering Israel from slavery in Egypt. Through Moses, God gives His law and forms a people for Himself.
“And the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage… and God heard their groaning.” — Exodus 2:23-24 (KJV)
God rescues, leads, and commands. He begins to shape a holy nation.
3. Leviticus – Holiness and Worship
Leviticus might feel tough to read, but it reveals how serious sin is and how much we need a mediator. It explains sacrifices, priests, and purity—all pointing forward to Christ.
“For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves… and be ye holy; for I am holy.” — Leviticus 11:44 (KJV)
4. Numbers – Lessons in Trusting God
Numbers tells of Israel’s journey through the wilderness. Despite God’s provision, they grumble and rebel, leading to 40 years of wandering. Still, God remains faithful.
“But as truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord.” — Numbers 14:21 (KJV)
This book teaches us the importance of obedience, trust, and godly leadership.
5. Deuteronomy – Renewing the Covenant
Deuteronomy is Moses’ final message before the people enter the Promised Land. He reminds them of God’s law and faithfulness.
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.” — Deuteronomy 6:5 (KJV)
Moses pleads with them to choose life by loving and obeying the Lord.
What This Means for Us
These five books aren’t just for scholars or pastors—they’re for us. They help us know:
- Who God is (holy, powerful, faithful)
- Who we are (made in His image, yet sinful)
- How God begins His redemptive plan
- Why we need a Savior
Every law and story points ahead to Jesus, who fulfilled the law and made a new way for us to live in covenant with God.
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law… I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.” — Matthew 5:17 (KJV)
What’s Next
In Part 2, we’ll look at the Historical Books—from Joshua to Esther. These books show us how Israel lived out God’s covenant in the real world. They are filled with battles, victories, failures, and incredible lessons about faith, leadership, and God’s sovereignty.
Until then, let’s stay grounded in the Word. Let’s remember the deep roots of our faith found in these opening books. Let’s walk forward in trust—just like God called His people to do from the very beginning.
