2. The Test of Obedience (1 John 2:3-6)

“And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.”
Many claim to know God, but true faith is demonstrated by obedience. We cannot walk in darkness while claiming to follow the Light.
1 John 2:4 (KJV) warns:
“He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”
This does not mean we are saved by works, but that obedience is the natural response of a transformed heart. If we truly abide in Christ, our lives will reflect His righteousness.

3. The Command to Love (1 John 2:7-11)
John emphasizes that love is central to the Christian life.
1 John 2:10 (KJV) says:
“He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.”
Loving one another is not a new commandment; it has been part of God’s plan from the beginning. However, Jesus demonstrated this love in a perfect way, giving us the ultimate example.
1 John 2:9 (KJV) warns:
“He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.”
Hatred and bitterness are incompatible with a life in Christ. If we claim to be in the light, we must love one another sincerely.

- Show love through actions, not just words.
- Forgive and let go of bitterness.
- Reflect Christ’s love in our relationships.
4. Warning Against Worldliness (1 John 2:15-17)
John warns us not to be attached to the world’s sinful desires and temporary pleasures.
1 John 2:15 (KJV):
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”
The world tempts us with materialism, pride, and self-indulgence, but these things will pass away.
1 John 2:17 (KJV) assures us:
“And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.”
Instead of pursuing temporary pleasures, we should seek eternal treasures in Christ.

5. Warning Against Antichrists and False Teachers (1 John 2:18-23)
John warns that false teachers will arise, denying Christ and leading many astray.
1 John 2:22 (KJV) states:
“Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.”
Any teaching that denies Christ’s deity and atoning work is false. We must guard against deception by staying grounded in Scripture.

- Stay close to the truth and reject false doctrines.
- Be discerning and stand firm in our faith.
6. Abiding in Christ (1 John 2:24-29)
John encourages us to remain faithful to the truth and abide in Christ.
1 John 2:27 (KJV):
“But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.”
God has given us the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth. If we remain in Him, we will not be deceived.
1 John 2:28 (KJV) calls us to be confident in His return:
“And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming.”

- Stay rooted in God’s Word.
- Rely on the Holy Spirit for discernment.
- Live in readiness for Christ’s return.
